Abstract
The Susan Wineberg collection consist of materials relating to her academic pursuits in the Historic Preservation program at Eastern Michigan University, personal travel, preservation efforts, and her involvement with the Preservation Ladies preservation group, Ann Arbor Historic District Commission and Washtenaw County Historical District. In addition, this collection contains materials collected on various trips throughout the United States of America and Europe. The date range for the materials is 1915 to 2010. This collection contains primary and secondary research materials such as correspondences, photographs of architectural style examples primarily photographed by Wineberg, postcards, calendars, course materials and exams, and extensive run of publications related to historic preservation. This collection is rich with information regarding architects, architectural nomenclature, building technology, cultural landscapes, decorative arts and material culture, heritage tourism, international historic preservation, architectural styles, preservation funding, building materials, and historic preservation methods, techniques and advocacy.

Biographical Note

Susan Wineberg was born in Chicago on 1946 February 5. Wineberg relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1964 where she pursued her Bachelor of Arts (1967) and Master of Arts (1971) in Near East Studies at the University of Michigan (U of M), and a Master of Arts in Anthropology (1976, also from U of M). Later on she received a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University (1994). Through her many travels Wineberg has made a point of collecting materials and taking photographs of important examples of architectural styles, types and material use; historic landscapes, heritage tourism, and material culture and decorative arts.

Throughout her life Wineberg has been a strong advocate for historic preservation through multiple stints on the Ann Arbor Historic District Commission (1992-2008), and serving on the Division Street Historic District Study Committee (1977-1993), the Landmarks Historic Preservation Study Committee (1986-1988), the Downtown Historic District Study Committee (1986-1992), the Ann Arbor Historical Foundation (1986-current), the Museum Planning Committee (1999-2003), the Washtenaw County Historical Society (1988-current), the Awards Committee of the Ann Arbor Historic District Commission since 1988 and the Individual Historic Properties Historic District Study Committee (1980). She is also a founding of the Old Fourth Ward Association (1984-current).

In 1992 Wineberg co-authored (with Marjorie Reade) the popular text Historic Buildings, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Wineberg married Lars Bjorn in 1984 and still resides in Ann Arbor.

Scope and Contents note

The Susan Wineberg collection documents Wineberg's interest in historic preservation, cultural landscapes and heritage tourism. A graduate of the Historic Preservation program at Eastern Michigan University the collection contains materials from her course work and final project.

The collection is organized into 7 series: Personal, Historic Preservation Advocacy and Collaboration, Built Environment, Cultural Landscapes and Heritage Tourism, Heritage Tourism Collectibles, Photographs and Slides, and  Publications. Each series is further subdivided into topical subseries and arranged alphabetically.

Records in the Personal series focus on Wineberg's course work in the Historic Preservation graduate degree program. Class notes and course packs are arranged alphabetically by the course identification number, e.g. GEO 350. Course papers, graded exams and personal correspondence are arranged chronologically.

Wineberg's interest and involvement in preservation efforts is the focus of the records in the Historic Preservation Advocacy and Collaboration series. Further subdivided into four subseries; International Preservation, Organizations, Preservation Issues and Preservation Planning, the records are arranged alphabetically by topic. Included at the file level are articles, news releases and communications from organizations involved with various preservation efforts. Subjects include adaptive use, development, renovation and restoration, museums and historic homes, and salvage.

The Built Environment series is a comprehensive collection of subject files which include articles, visual examples, publications, press releases and clippings. Materials are further subdivided into five subseries; Architects, Architectural Nomenclature, Building Technology, Decorative Arts and Materials Culture, and Styles and Types; and are arranged alphabetically.

Records in the Cultural Landscapes and Heritage is another collection of subject files that include articles, visual examples, publications and clippings. Materials in this series are arranged into three subseries; Cultural Heritage, Cultural Landscapes, and Heritage Tourism. Cultural Heritage and Cultural Landscapes are alphabetically arranged in subject files that highlight specific places, people and styles. Topics include: African American Heritage Sites, Capitols, Drive-ins, Governor's Mansions, Malls, Urban Archaeology and Walking Tours. Materials in the subseries Heritage Tourism are organized by state and arranged alphabetically. Wineberg had a particular interest in some cities and collected more information for those places. They include: Chicago, New York, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh and can be found arranged by state. When necessary, materials are further organized by topic.

Materials in the Heritage Tourism Collectibles series are organized by material type and further arranged alphabetically. There are four subseries; Booklets, Calendars, Ephemera, and Postcards. Booklets and calendars are listed by the title of the publication. Booklets include a wide range of topics including building materials, decoration and historic homes. Postcards were originally housed in both file folders and in albums and arranged by location which is the reason for duplicate location listings.

The Negatives, Photographs and Slides series includes images taken by Wineberg and prints of architectural examples. The materials are arranged by image type; then alphabetically. Within the United States subseries, images are arranged geographically according to the United States Census Bureau categorization. Reproduction prints are from ART 101 taught at Mt. Holyoke with a print date circa 1915 and include architectural examples across the United States. The prints are arranged by region and in some instances by state.

In the initial donation there were a number of publications. Some of the materials were separated to the circulating collection of the library, those that remained with the collection were separated to the Publications series. There is a bibliography included in the series, otherwise the materials are arranged by title and include catalogues, monographs, pamphlets and serials.
