- John B. Virtue was a professor of English at Eastern Michigan University from 1946 until 1971. Virtue taught classic literature including Shakespeare and was well loved by both students and staff. His papers consist primarily of meeting minutes, memos, records books, clippings and published articles. The papers are arranged alphabetically. Records date from 1942 to 1989.

Biographical Note
John "Jack" Bernard Virtue was a professor in the English Department at Eastern Michigan University from 1946 to 1971.
Virtue was born in 1901 in Winona, Minnesota. He received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Nebraska in 1923 and 1924 respectfully. He received his PhD. from Yale in 1935. Virtue taught in the English Departments at the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, and the University of Kansas.
During his tenure at Eastern Michigan University's English Department, Virtue proved himself to be invaluable. He taught many classes on classic literature including Shakespeare and was well loved by students and staff alike. Virtue was the past president of Michigan College English Association, and a member of the American Association of University Professors.
Virtue retired from Eastern Michigan University as a Professor Emeritus in 1971. Virtue resided in Saline, Michigan until his death in 1984.
Scope and Contents
The John B. Virtue Papers contains biographical information, course descriptions, employment papers, meeting minutes, memos, record books and published articles. The collection is arranged alphabetically and is in one series. Records date from 1942 to 1989.
The series included in the collection is Career and Legacy. The series contains three subseries of minutes of the English Department meetings, memos and notices, and Record Books.
