Administrative note

The Women's and Gender Studies Department was initiated in 1975 and has grown from offering the first minor in Women's Studies in Michigan, to offering an undergraduate major and minor, and the state's only stand-alone Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies. In 2003, the Women's Studies Program added "Gender" to its name, and launched a minor in Queer Studies in 2013. Courses offer an education that focuses on contributions of women to history, literature, science, education, family and work in a cultural context, as well as insights into the psychology of women, the impact of women on social structures and how women influence contemporary society.
