Historical Note
The photographs in this collection previously resided within the appropriate folders in the Subject File Collection. When utilizing this collection, researchers noted that the files often contained photographs, many of which appeared to have historical importance. Given that the primary materials in the Subject File Collection are manuscripts, typical use of the collection is review of information found in the paper documents, not the photographs. However, because the photographs were intermingled with the documents, they were receiving unnecessary wear and tear. Thus, the photographs were removed from the individual folders in the Subject File Collection, photocopied, and the copy placed back in the original folder. Each original photographic item (negative, slide, etc.) was then placed in a correspondingly named folder within the Subject File Photograph Collection. This allows researchers to be aware of what photographs are within the Subject File Collection, maintain the photographic item’s association in the file, but better preserve the photographs.
Scope and Contents note
The Subject File Photograph Collection comprises photographic items documenting student groups (i.e., fraternities, sororities, clubs), the Aurora (campus newspaper), campus buildings and structures, departments, and events. The campus building and structure photographs focus on university buildings including residence and classroom halls, a stadium, and the student center. Campus structures include the natural science gardens and fountain. Most of the building photographs taken during the last 40 years and some of the campus structures photographs are from the 1910s and 1920s. The remaining categories such as the student groups, the Aurora, departments and events, focus on campus life of both students and faculty, with most images depicting people. The bulk of these photographs were taken during the 1950s-1960s, with known representation also from the early 1920s and the 1980s-1990s. The photographs in the collection do a good job of representing campus life in terms of both infrastructure and people during the timeframes the photographs were taken. However, not all eras are equally represented, and not all subjects in the Subject File Collection contained photographs to be removed and placed within this collection. Thus, there are both chronological and subject gaps within the collection.
Arrangement note
The arrangement corresponds with the alphabetical arrangement of the Subject File Collection. Each folder in the collection is named after its equivalent folder in the Subject File Collection. The individual photographs are ordered in the same manner in which they reside in the Subject File Collection. The folders are stored in boxes based on size. A folder that contains photographic materials only letter size or smaller resides in boxes one and three, while folders with items larger than letter size but less than or equal to legal size reside in box two (there are no photographic items in the collection larger than this). To ensure access to the original photographs, the photocopies placed in the original Subject File Collection in place of the original photographs are each labeled with the Subject File Photograph Collection’s call number (018.SFP), the folder name (e.g. “Aurora”), and the box, folder number (e.g., “1,2”). Some photographs have captions (in English) on the back (primarily limited to year, photographer name, subject identification), but these captions are not recorded on the photocopies.
