Abstract
The records of the Student Christian Association, 1853-1925, include founding documents, minutes and reports; prayer meeting announcements; the publication titled "Green Book"; and fundraising materials for the construction of Starkweather Hall and World War I soldiers and veterans. The Student Christian Association (SCA) operated independently of Michigan State Normal while catering specifically to the religious life of individuals attending the college. Meetings were held in the main campus building and conservatory prior to the construction of Starkweather Hall, which was funded entirely by the Starkweather family and built adjacent to the main campus buildings. The SRA supported the religious life of students on campus through the 1920s. Subsequent organizations on campus that were founded to offer similar support were the Baptist Student Association, Christian Youth Fellowship, Office of Religious Affairs and the Student Religious Association.

Administrative History

The Student's Christian Association (SCA) was active on campus starting in the 1880s and was incorporated with the County Clerk of Washtenaw County and the Secretary of State as an official organization in March of 1896. The purpose of the association as stated in the articles of incorporation were "through the agency of the Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Women's Christian Association of the State Normal School aforesaid to lead its members and others to an earnest study of the scriptures: to a knowledge of Jesus Christ and their Devine Lord and Master; to an acceptance of his Word and of the Holy Spirit as the guide of life; to strive after purity and uprightness of character and conduct and to promote a christian fellowship and incite an active, aggressive christian work. Also, to hold, manage and control the building and property known as Starkweather Hall, and such other temporalities as may from time to time be committed to its care and as are consistent with the purposes of this organization as above set forth.

The SCA held weekly prayer meetings in the main campus building, conservatory hall, and finally Starkweather Hall. The organization supported the religious life of students on campus through the 1920s. Much of the work of the SCA was assumed the Office of Religious Affairs which operated out of Starkweather Hall through the 1970s.
