The Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity collection contains the information of the Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma at Eastern Michigan University. The collection includes the articles of incorporation from 1966, behavioral workshop information, correspondence, newspaper clippings and articles, pamphlets and brochures, liability insurance, chapter management guides, the Alpha Theta colony petition,  The Saga newsletter, codes of conduct, by laws, constitutions, and policies. The collection does not contain much from the earliest days of the Fraternity.

Historical Note

The Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity was founded at the University of Central Missouri by a group of World War I veterans on July 27, 1920. Dissatisfied with the literary fraternities on campus, their organization emphasized lasting friendship, and promoted manhood, citizenship, and brotherhood. Today, Sigma Tau Gamma stands on the principles of scholarship, teamwork, and growth. The Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma was founded on March 20, 1848 at Eastern Michigan University. However, due to anti-establishment movements during the Vietnam War, the Alpha Theta chapter was shut down in 1975. In 1991, Alpha Theta re-colonized at Eastern Michigan University, and was re-chartered on February 3, 1996.
