- The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) is an independent organization whose goal it is to set a standard for educational institutions to follow for accreditation. This standard is met and maintained by an institution of higher learning in order to receive and hold accreditation. The Self-Study Reports are created by the educational institutions to self-evaluate and hold themselves accountable for their curriculum and the administration of their school, college, or university. The Self-Study Reports for University Accreditation records for Eastern Michigan University document the accreditation process that the University has undergone since 1941. The collection is arranged into three series; Administrative Files, Reports and Raw Data. The Administrative Files series only documents the 2001Self-Study Report. The Reports series contains finalized self-study reports for the following years, 1941, 1955, 1964, 1975, 1981, 1990, and 2001. The Raw Data Files series contains findings for only the 1990 and 2001 self-studies, compiled by each department, office and program.

Historical Note
The North Central Association was organized in 1895 at a meeting of 36 administrators of schools, colleges, and universities located in seven midwestern states. The association's original objective was "the establishment of close relations between the colleges and secondary schools." Better articulation between the two levels of education was a particular focus. In pursuit of that objective, the association undertook a thorough examination of education quality at both the secondary and college level. That examination process led to the establishment of an accreditation process for secondary schools. Accreditation of colleges and universities followed later.
The accreditation work of the North Central Association is undertaken by two independent corporations, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) oversees higher education accreditation, providing institution level accreditation of degree granting colleges and universities and the Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) accredits a wide variety of educational institutions, ranging from early childhood, through elementary, middle, and secondary schools to adult vocational, college preparatory, and non degree granting postsecondary institutions. In July 2006, NCA CASI combined with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council on Accreditation and School Improvement to form AdvancED; NCA CASI and SACS CASI now operate as divisions of AdvancED and as components of their respective regional associations.

The Self-Study Reports for University Accreditation records for Eastern Michigan University documents the accreditation process that the University has undergone since 1941. The collection is arranged into three series; Administrative Files, Reports and Raw Data. The Administrative Files series only documents the 2001Self-Study Report and contains meeting and visit schedules, steering committee meeting minutes and notes, press releases and publicity as well as a copy of the NCA Publication: Handbook of Accreditation, 2nd Edition (1997). The Reports series contains finalized self-study reports for the following years, 1941, 1955, 1964, 1975, 1981, 1990, and 2001. The Raw Data Files series contains findings for only the 1990 and 2001 self-studies, compiled by each department, office and program. This raw data ranges from financial undertakings, human resources, athletics, new degree/programs, and existing department course offerings and proposals.

Accruals note
University Archives continues to add materials to the collection. To reflect additions, edits to the finding aid will occur at the end of each calendar year. At the current time, Winter 2012, there is planning for the next Self-Study Report. As soon as this material becomes available, it will be added to the collection.
