- The Phi Delta Pi Fraternity collection contains the records of the Phi Delta Pi Fraternity at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) between 1899 and 1954. It includes correspondence and clippings, directories, a book of meeting minutes, ritual, membership lists and a certificate, several volumes of The Extended Somewhat, and Washington Dinner Dance programs and cards. The precursor to the Phi Delta Pi Fraternity was the Washington Toastmasters’ Club founded in 1893.

Historical Note
The Phi Delta Pi Fraternity was founded as the Washington Toastmasters’ Club on February 22, 1893 at Eastern Michigan University with the purpose of mutual enjoyment and the cultivation of the art of speech. Nine men founded the Toastmaster’s club, and they held their first banquet on May 20 of that year. In the fall of 1899, the organization became Phi Delta Pi and elected Dr. Hoyt as its patron.
