- Publications, research material, administrative files, and biographical information related to Paul E. Hubbell (1891-1993), history professor at Michigan State Normal College from 1923-1958 who turned to writing poetry after his retirement. Born in Virginia, Hubbell served in the U.S. Army during World War I and taught Modern History after his graduation from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. The collection includes drafts and final versions of presentations and publications by Hubbell, both academic writings and poetry, items that were of research interest to him, administrative files related to his service on the college's Aims and Objectives committee, a variety of letters to the editor on issues including the Vietnam War, and biographical material detailing his life.

Biographical note
Paul Edgar Hubbell was born in Hat Creek, VA, in 1891. He attended Wake Forest College and the University of Richmond. He briefly taught high school and college Latin until 1914, when he received a Rhodes Scholarship and went to Oxford University to study history. His studies there were interrupted by World War I, and he served in the U.S. Army, returning to Oxford in after the war's end and completing his M.A. in 1920. He taught in Savannah, GA, Furman University, SC, and Baylor College, TX, before coming to Michigan State Normal College in 1923 to teach modern history, especially World War I. He retired from classroom teaching in 1958, after which time he engaged in correspondence courses, wrote numerous letters to the editor on issues of political interest, and published several volumes of poetry. Hubbell was married to M. Anne Thompson (d. 1966) and they had one daughter, Ann. He died at the age of 101 in 1993.
Scope and Contents
The Paul E. Hubbell papers provide information on the life and career of Paul Edgar Hubbell, Professor of History at Michigan State Normal College from 1923-1958. The collection includes a brief autobiography written by Hubbell, as well as various newspaper articles profiling him and his career, administrative files related to his work with the college's Aims and Objects Committee and to the strike in 1978, material related to courses he taught, his copy of the 1950 Aurora yearbook, drafts and final versions of various papers and presentations by Hubbell, several volumes of his poetry, and a selection of letters to the editor and opinion pieces he composed. Also included are various publications and articles on matters of interest to Hubbell, mainly from the 1920s and 1930s.
Arrangement of materials
The collection is arranged into three series: 1. Biographical material, which includes Hubbell's own account of his life and work, as well as various articles profiling him, and several obituaries; Administration, teaching, and research, which comprises documents related to Hubbell's work on the college's Aims and Objects Committee and his opinions on the faculty strike in 1978, material connected to his teaching and courses, and publications by other people on matters of interest to Hubbell; 3. Publications and writing, which includes drafts and final versions of academic papers and presentations related to historical matters, poetry and fiction by Hubbell, and his reviews and letters to the editor on matters of political importance, particularly the Vietnam war.
