Abstract
The Oratorical Association records include materials pertaining to the Michigan State Normal College student organization, which practiced debate and oratory. Records include graphic materials such as scrapbook pages, flyers, posters, and programs, as well as administrative papers such as correspondence and constitutions. Some materials from the Department of Elocution and Oratory are also included. The records are dated approximately 1916 to 1937.

Administrative History

The Oratorical Society was established 1891 at Michigan State Normal College, as a student organization associated with the Department of Elocution and Oratory. The students practiced debates and oratorical programs, and competed with societies from other colleges in Michigan.

Scope and Contents

The Oratorical Association records include administrative papers such as correspondence, bound constitutions, and student honors listings, as well as graphic materials such as pamphlets and flyers, programs, event tickets, scrapbook pages (unbound), posters. The bulk of the material is dated approximately 1891 to 1937.

Arrangement of Materials

The Oratorical Association records have been divided into two series:  Administration and history and  Student Honors. The Administration and history series includes records pertaining to the founding and functions of the Society, such as constitutions, correspondence, pamphlets, programs, and posters. The Student Honors series includes index cards identifying students, arranged in alphabetical order by academic year, who received honors in either Oratory or Debate.
