Abstract
The Office of Development records, documents the work of the office on campus responsible for fundraising and planned giving until 1989 when the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Foundation was established as an institutionally related nonprofit corporation that solicits and manages funds on behalf of Eastern Michigan University and provides additional support to the students, programs, services and educational community of EMU. Records in the collection range from 1970-1993 and contains correspondence, fundraising sample letters, memorabilia, clippings, as well as booklets and pamphlets. The collection does not document the creation of the EMU Foundation or the split from the Alumni Association in the late 1960s.

Administrative History Note

The Office of Development, was the office on campus responsible for fundraising and planned giving. Now a 501c3, the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Foundation, is an institutionally related nonprofit corporation that solicits and manages funds on behalf of Eastern Michigan University and provides additional support to the students, programs, services and educational community of EMU. Prior to the establishment of the Office of Development, these functions were part of the Alumni Relations Board. The EMU Foundation was created in 1989 by the EMU Regents and is governed by an independent Board of Trustees that elects its own officers. All trustees serve as volunteers. The EMU Foundation also manages the endowed assets of the University. Through investments and fundraising, the endowment had a market value of $51.4 million as of June 30, 2012. The EMU Foundation also maintains a database containing approximately 150,000 alumni living in all states across the United States as well as foreign nations.

Scope and Contents note

The Office of Development records documents the office that preceded the Eastern Michigan University Foundation as the office responsible for fundraising and prior to becoming the Office of Development was part of Alumni Relations. The collection is arranged into 5 series, with materials dating between 1970 and 1993.

The Administrative Files series contains correspondence and a program statement. The   Fundraising Sample Letters series contains the files: 2+2 Program, Acknowledgement, Artist in Resident, Campus Campaign, Corporate Visits, Development Office, "E" Club, EMU Theatre, Football Bust, Foundations Request, Gifts, Huron/Booster Club, Lybunt Letters to Alumni, Memoriam Card, National Collegiate Athletic Association, Phonathon, Plan Giving, Presidents, Regents, University Appeal, and University Circle.

The Memorabilia series contains a Christmas card, a football, gift mugs, an honor roll pin and a suitcase tag. The   Press series contains files for  Eastern Magazine, Heritage Newsletters, Newspaper Articles, and Press Releases. The   Promotional Material series contains booklets and brochures; materials on the Campaign for Scholars, Faculty/Staff Campaign, Harold E. Sponberg Theater Campaign; Honor Roll, Pamphlets; Posters; Presidents Club; Presidents Council; Scholarship Golf Tournaments; Tower Club, and University Circle.

It not a complete record of the Office of Development.
