Abstract
The records of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration documents the events that have occurred in celebration of the Civil Right leader on the campus of Eastern Michigan University since the 1980s. The community of Eastern Michigan University continues this annual celebration with a weekend of events. Events include performances, discussions, lectures and guest speakers and the highlight event of the President's luncheon with a keynote speaker and honorees. The collection primarily consists of press releases, clippings, programs, and other materials from the day of the event. In addition, some years include planning materials including meeting minutes, correspondence and rosters of program coordinators. Buttons, tee shirts and other realia from the 1990s and early 2000s is also included in the collection. The collection includes a complete run of event materials from 1987-2011, with some years more exhaustively documented than others. The records are divided into three series, Audio Visual Materials, Program Planning and Event Materials and  Realia and are arranged chronologically.

Historical Note

On December 6, 1989 the Board of Regents of Eastern Michigan University passed a resolution to "continue as an official annual University tradition, the Martin Luther King Jr., Birthday Celebration to do honor to contributions enhancing and promoting human dignity." It was encouraged through this resolution that all areas of the University be involved in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday which would occur on the same day as the National Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance. The community of Eastern Michigan University continues this annual celebration with a weekend of events. Events include performances, discussions, lectures and guest speakers and the highlight event of the President's luncheon with a keynote speaker and honorees.
