Abstract
Laurence N. Smith has gained national recognition as a pioneer in marketing of non-profit institutions and service organizations as well as his work in executive development and Transformation Management. Smith worked for Eastern Michigan University in the capacity of Vice President for University Marketing and Student Affairs starting in 1975 where he had overall leadership responsibility for strategic University marketing, communication and media relations, as well as student affairs. The Laurence N. Smith collection ranges from years 1975 to 2000 and contains administrative files, correspondence, information and edits from the Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquincentennial Portrait publication as well as the research files for the 150th anniversary publication created with the assistance of Paul C. Heaton.

Biographical note

Laurence N. Smith has gained national recognition as a pioneer in marketing of non-profit institutions and service organizations as well as his work in executive development and Transformation Management -- mobilizing institutions, communities and organizations for revitalization and renewal. In 1969 Smith served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Chicago State University. He has also held several positions including Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1960 to 1969. Since 1975, he was emeritus Vice President for University Marketing and Student Affairs at Eastern Michigan University where he had overall leadership responsibility for strategic University marketing, communication and media relations, as well as student affairs. In 1999, the University recognized his significant contributions to it, his profession, and the national community by awarding him an honorary doctorate. Mr. Smith received his Bachelors degree from the University of Rochester, his Masters degree, and advanced graduate studies at the State University of New York Buffalo.

Scope and Contents note

The Laurence N. Smith collection documents range from 1975 to 2000 and is arranged into four series: Administrative Files, Correspondence, Eastern Michigan University: A sesquincentennial Portait, and Media. The  Administrative Files series includes files such as Center for Urban Educational Improvement, College of Arts and Sciences Meeting Presentation, Goals, Proposals for Founding Partners, Recommendations, Report of Accomplishments, Resolution, Speeches, Strategic Integrated Marketing and Communications Plan, and Transformation Management Presentation. The  Correspondence series contains chronological files from 1988-2000. The  Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquincentennial Portraitseries includes research files for compiled with the assistance of Paul C.
