- The Kappa Phi Alpha Fraternity collection documents the activities of the local fraternity at Eastern Michigan University. Kappa Phi Alpha was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1902. The collection is arranged alphabetically and divided into three series, with the exception of a scrapbook which is housed separately. The three series are Administration and History, Eric Fillyaw Case, and Publicity and Outreach. Records date from 1929-2011.

Administrative History
Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1902 on Eastern Michigan University's campus. The fraternity is local, with its only chapter being located at Eastern Michigan University. The fraternity went through much turmoil in the mid 1990s when a pledge, Eric Fillyaw, was killed in a car accident after leaving an event at the Kappa Phi Alpha house. The fraternity was ultimately put on two year probation from the University because of this incident. The fraternity was reestablished only to run into more trouble in 2009 when a University student was allegedly raped while attending a party at the Kappa Phi Alpha house.
Scope and Contents
The Kappa Phi Alpha Fraternity collection contains information on accounting records, constitution, house regulations, incident reports, meeting minutes, member lists, pledge letters, songs, clippings, correspondence, events, flyers, newsletters programs and scrapbook. There is also extensive information about the Eric Fillyaw case, who was a pledge of Kappa Phi Alpha before he was killed. The collection is arranged alphabetically.
The collection is divided into three series. The Administration and History series contains information on accounting records, constitution, house regulations, incident reports, meeting minutes, member lists, pledge letters, and songs. Meeting Minutes is its own series and is divided into chronological files that date from 1930-1932, 1933-1936, 1965-1966, 1966-1967, 1967-1968, 1968-1969. The Eric Fillyaw Case series contains information on correspondence, documents, InterFraternity Council Hearing, and police interviews. The Publicity and Outreach series includes information on clippings, correspondence, events and flyers, newsletters, programs. The Kappa Phi Alpha scrapbook is housed in a separate box.
The collection records date from 1929-2011.
Arrangement of Materials
The collection is arranged into three series: 1. Administration and History of Kappa Phi Alpha Fraternity, including an overview of the fraternity's accounting records, constitution, house regulations, incident reports, meeting minutes, member lists, pledge letters and songs; 2. Eric Fillyaw Case, which includes correspondence, documents, InterFraternity Council hearing, and police interviews regarding the death of a fraternity pledge; 3. Publicity and Outreach includes information on fraternity news clippings, correspondence, events and flyers, newsletters, and programs. The Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity scrapbook is housed in a separate archive container.
