The Joseph Estabrook papers document the fourth president of Michigan State Normal College, who served from 1871-1880. His papers include such materials as press clippings, researcher biographies, obituaries, and a bound draft of Estabrook's history of MSNC.

Biographical Note

Joseph Estabrook was born July 3, 1820 in Bath, New Hampshire; his father Joseph Estabrook was a graduate of Harvard College and a pastor in Concord, Massachusetts. The family relocated to Alden, New York in 1833, and eventually Clinton, Michigan. Estabrook was educated in the district schools and graduated from Oberlin College in 1847. He taught in the district schools of Lenawee county, Clinton, and Tecumseh; in 1853, he was appointed the principal of the Ypsilanti public schools. Estabrook was subsequently appointed superintendent of the East Saginaw public schools in 1866, and in 1871, began his appointment as principal of MSNC, a position he held through 1880. From 1880 through his death, Estabrook served as a professor at Oberlin College.

Scope and Contents

The Joseph Estabrook papers include the following files: Biographies by researchers, two handwritten volumes of Estabrook's  A Brief Outline of the History of the Michigan State Normal College, materials from dedications of buildings named for Estabrook, press clippings, correspondence, Estabrook's curriculum vitae, memorial programs and obituaries, and student classifications with Estabrook's signature. Estabrook was the fourth president of Michigan State Normal College, serving from 1871-1880.
