Administrative History

The John W. Porter College of Education Building records pertain to the dedication of the Building on Eastern Michigan University's campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The building was erected in 1967 as the new library. It was constructed at a cost of $2.68 million, and at 133,500 square feet, there were soon concerns that it would be too small for the growing library collection. In the mid 1990s, plans were made for a new library building, and the old building was remodeled for the Department of Education. The Building is named for John W. Porter, EMU President from 1979 through 1988, who also had a distinguished career as a teacher and administrator in Michigan schools.
