- John S. Elwell was a faculty member of the Department of Music at Eastern Michigan University from 1948 to 1975. His papers consist of correspondence, clippings, programs from musical events, and a large collection of sheet music which Elwell accumulated.

Biographical note
John S. Elwell was a member of the Eastern Michigan University Department of Music faculty from 1948 to 1975. Elwell completed his BS in Music at Michigan State Normal College (EMU) in 1932, and his Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan in 1939; he spent two summer sessions at the Christiansen Choral School. Before joining Eastern's faculty, he worked as a high school music teacher and choir director in Almont and Saginaw, Michigan. He also served as a member of the summer music faculty at the National Music Camp at Interlochen for 17 years.
Locally, Elwell was involved in the Ypsilanti Community Concert Association and the Ypsilanti Historical Society. In 1971, he was named Teacher of the Year by the Michigan School Vocal Association. Elwell served as President of the Michigan Music Educators Association for two terms, Secretary of the Schoolmaster's Club for seven years, Treasurer of the Michigan School Vocal Association for three terms, and Treasurer of MMEA for four terms.
John S. Elwell passed away on June 20, 1976 in Oscoda, FL.
