- Records of the Eastern Echo student newspaper, formerly the Normal News and the Normal College News. The collection (1881-2010) includes business records, staff lists, financial documents, news clippings related to the Echo, awards, correspondence, programs from newspaper events, publicity and advertising materials.

Administrative History
The Normal News began in 1881, before becoming the Eastern Echo in 1956. It is an independent student paper, meaning that it is funded through advertising revenue and the university exercises no editorial control over the paper. The Eastern Echo has won numerous awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and the Michigan Collegiate Press Association.
Scope and Contents
The collection covers the business, organizational, and financial activities of the Normal News beginning in 1881, and after 1956 continues to document the activities of the Eastern Echo. Financial records are particularly well-represented in the 1930s and 1940s, as well as by a bound cash book from the period 1881-1893. Another bound book documents the Proceedings of the Normal News Committee from 1937 to 1954. News clippings highlighting notable events in the newspaper's history date from 1940 to 2011. Two copies of the magazine "The 'U' and You" from 1974 and 1975 are also included. Correspondence relates particularly to soliciting book reviews in the 1980s, but there are also a few other letters in the collection from earlier dates. A small paperback style guide from 1928 is included, as well as two other sets of guidelines for staff from the 1930s and 1940s. There are also programs from the annual oratorical contest sponsored by the paper, dating from 1890, 1891, and 1895, as well as programs from the Student Media banquet from 1991, 1999, 2001, and 2002.
Arrangement of Materials
The collection is organized into four series: Series 1. Business Files, which contains style and reporting guidelines, lists of newspaper staff, proceedings of the Normal News Committee, and a student media business plan; Series 2. Financial Records, which contains a cash book, a number of budgets and financial statements, and information on advertising rates; Series 3. Publicity and Outreach, which includes press coverage, printouts from the newpaper's website, a historical sketch, two copies of The 'U' and You outreach material, programs for newspaper-sponsored events, and awards won by the Eastern Echo; Series 4. Correspondence and Drafts, which includes letters to and from staff of the paper, particularly focused on book reviews.
