Administrative History note

As a response to the growing need for health and other service professionals, Eastern Michigan University established the College of Human Services in 1975. Programs in the original College included Home Economics, Nursing, Medical Technology, and Occupational Therapy.

Since 1975, the College has undergone a significant amount of growth and was the first on campus to have departments designated as professional schools. The name was changed from the College of Human Services to the College of Health and Human Services on April 21, 1982, to better reflect the college’s differing educational parameters. Expanding in 2000, with the construction of the Everett L. Marshall College of Health and Human Services, the college not only expanded physically but also expanded programing to serve students in the fields of Clinical Laboratory Sciences; Health Administration; Occupational Therapy; Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising; Dietetics; Hotel and Restaurant Management; Interior Design; Nursing; Social Work and Gerontology. These programs are housed within the four additional schools of Health Promotion & Human Performance, Health Sciences, Nursing, and Social Work. Graduate degrees are offered in Nursing and Social Work.

Scope and Contents note

The records of the College of Health and Human Services consist of administrative files pertaining to the activities of the College including proposals, course descriptions, news clippings and audio/visual recruitment materials relating to the different departments within the College. The collection spans from 1982 to 2012. Although this is not a comprehensive record of the College, it does document the most recent activities. The records are arranged into 3 series, ADMINISTRATIVE FILES, including annual reports, course descriptions, doctoral proposals, reviews, general information about the college, and strategic plans; AUDIO/VISUAL MATERIALS includes scripts, slides, and cassette tapes developed for student recruitment for the different departmental programs which include Health Administration, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, and Health Administration; and PUBLICATIONS which includes brochures, clippings,  Connection the alumni magazine,  The Geriatric Education Center of Michigan, and  Understanding Difficult Behaviors. The materials are arranged alphabetically within the series. The intellectual arrangement does not mirror the physical arrangement.
