- The Purpose of the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) is to further the well-being of the African American community of Eastern Michigan University and to contribute to the institution's quest for excellence. The BFSA sponsors activities appropriate to these aims and engages in research and dialogue on institutional initiatives and direction. The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) records includes a wide variety of textual materials detailing the history and administration of the BFSA. The original order of the collection was maintained, and materials were grouped into three series. Files within these series include a date range and have been arranged chronologically, with the bulk of materials dating from 1985-1992.

Administrative History
The Purpose of the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) is to further the well-being of the African American community of Eastern Michigan University and to contribute to the institution's quest for excellence. The BFSA aims to: 1. Improve the academic experience and quality of life for the Black student body. 2. Enhance the quality of work life and promote the professional development of Black faculty, staff, and administrators. 3. Increase the responsiveness of the institution to the academic, socio-economic and technological challenges facing higher education. The BFSA sponsors activities appropriate to these aims and engages in research and dialogue on institutional initiatives and direction.
Scope and Contents
The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) collection includes a wide variety of textual materials detailing the history and administration of the BFSA.
The original order of the collection was maintained, and materials were grouped into three series: Administrative history, Publicity, and Activism. Files within these series include a date range and have been arranged chronologically. The Administrative history series includes membership lists and membership induction documents, correspondence, and governing records that document the administration of the association. The Publicity series includes press releases and newspaper clippings, BFSA newsletters, Upward Bound newsletters (another organization representing the interests of underrepresented youth, which has its own collection in the University Archives), and event flyers and planning records. The Activism series includes minority enrollment surveys completed in 1973 and recommendations and reports submitted to the Board of Trustees, as well as recommendations regarding curriculum relating to minority groups.
The bulk of the material is dated 1985-1992.
