- Abstract
- Betty Barber was an assistant professor in EMU's Department of Home Economics, later the Department of Human, Environmental, and Consumer Resources, and also in the Department of Teacher Education, from 1967-2004. Barber was also instrumental in establishing the state's first Women's Studies minor at EMU in 1975. The collection, which spans the years 1955-2004, includes personal and professional materials related to Barber's research, mentoring, and academic career.

Biographical note
Betty Barber was assistant professor in EMU's Department of Home Economics, later the Department of Human, Environmental, and Consumer Resources, and also in the Department of Teacher Education, from 1967-2004. Barber was also instrumental in establishing the first Women's Studies minor in 1975. She received her education at Jackson Junior College, Michigan State University, and her M.A. from EMU. Her research focused on delayed motherhood among career women, and she was involved in developing mentorship programs for young women.
Scope and contents
The Betty Barber papers (1955-2004) contain material related to the career and research of Betty Barber, assistant professor in EMU's Department of Home Economics, later the Department of Human, Environmental, and Consumer Resources, and also in the Department of Teacher Education, from 1967-2004. Barber was also instrumental in establishing the first Women's Studies minor in 1975. The collection includes administrative files related to Barber's sabbatical and application for emeritus status, clippings and press releases on her work, a photograph of Barber from 1979, grant applications, technical reports, and outreach material related to the Academy in Mentoring (AIM), presentations based on Barber's research into delayed motherhood, Barber's independent study evaluating a course in Family Life Education from 1955, and papers on sex education and women's studies.
Arrangement of materials
The collection is arranged into four series: 1. Personal files and press coverage, which includes copies of Barber's CV, newspaper clippings and press releases about Barber and her research, and a photograph of Barber from 1979; 2. Administrative files, which includes a report on Barber's sabbatical leave of 1981-1982 and her application for emeritus status; 3. Mentoring academy, including a grant application, technical report, and various presentations and outreach materials related to the Academy in Mentoring (AIM) project; 4. Research, which includes papers and presentations on various aspects of Barber's academic work on motherhood and career, women's studies, sex education, and the history of home economics.
