Publications, photographs, and biographical information related to Benjamin L. D'Ooge (1860-1940), professor and head of the Department of Ancient Languages at Michigan State Normal School. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, D'Ooge taught at Michigan State Normal School for fifty years, and was the author of numerous textbooks for teaching Latin. He retired in 1936. The collection includes genealogical and biographical material on D'Ooge and other members of his family, tributes and obituaries for D'Ooge, photographs of D'Ooge and other family members and houses, books, articles, and other documentation related to his publications, and correspondence and financial documents connected to the restoration of the portrait of D'Ooge in 2005-2006.

Biographical note

Benjamin Leonard D'Ooge was born in 1860 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at the University of Michigan, where his brother Martin was head of the Department of Greek, graduating in 1881. He taught high school physics and chemistry before returning to university for his master's degree in 1884. In 1886 he became head of the Department of Ancient Languages at Michigan State Normal School. While on leave to study in Europe, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn in 1901. He continued to teach at the Normal College until 1936, retiring after fifty years of service. Dr. D'Ooge also wrote numerous Latin textbooks. He died in 1940.

Scope and contents

The Benjamin L. D'Ooge papers detail the professional and personal activities of Benjamin D'Ooge, Latin professor at Michigan State Normal School, later Normal College, from 1886-1936. It includes biographical and genealogical materials related to various members of the D'Ooge family, clippings and tributes to D'Ooge, including multiple obituaries, documentation related to D'Ooge's writings and publications, including contracts with Ginn & Company and Benj. H. Sanborn & Co, Library of Congress copyright notices for numerous books by D'Ooge, a copy of his book  Urbis Romae viri inlustres and his thesis  Theology and Ethics of Euripedes, and a scroll advertising his book  Latin for Beginners. There is also correspondence and financial material related to the portrait of D'Ooge hanging in the Halle Library and its restoration in 2005-2006.

Arrangement of materials

The collection is arranged into three series: 1. Biographical and family papers, which includes genealogical materials related to the D'Ooge family, clippings and tributes to Benjamin D'Ooge, and photographs of family members and the family house; 2. Academic career and publications, which includes publications by Dr. D'Ooge and others, publishing contracts for his books, Library of Congress copyrights, and a scroll advertising his book "Latin for Beginners"; 3. Portrait restoration, which contains correspondence and financial materials related to the restoration of the portrait of Benjamin D'Ooge between 2004-2006, and items connected to the unveiling of the restored portrait.
