Abstract

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Eastern Michigan University Chapter collection documents the official business of the AAUP at Eastern Michigan University. The collection is arranged into nine series:  Administrative Files including Executive Committee Updates, Health Care and Benefits,  Constitution, By laws and Policies, Contracts and Agreements from 1971 until 2010,  Correspondence, Events Announcements, and Fliers, Meeting Minutes from 1956 until 2006,  Negotiations & Strikes including correspondence, bargaining sessions, and chief negotiator log,  Press containing clippings, newsletters, and releases, and  Professors for a Democratic Union. The collection is almost a complete record of the AAUP at Eastern Michigan University, with the exception of the 2011 contract which is not included in the collection and missing meeting minutes from 2007 - 2011.

Administrative History Note.

The EMU-AAUP is the local chapter of the national organization of the American Association of University Professors. The mission of the national AAUP is "to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good." The EMU chapter was formed in 1974 as the bargaining unit (the "labor union") of all faculty at EMU, and the first faculty contract was negotiated that year. As the faculty's union, the EMU-AAUP advises its members on the process of tenure and promotion (based on each academic department's contractually mandated "Department Evaluation Document") and works with EMU administrators to assure that the terms of the negotiated faculty contract are met. When necessary, the EMU-AAUP represents individual faculty in grievances against the university administration, and it protects the entire faculty through a variety of actions. The EMU-AAUP also provides seminars and services on retirement and financial planning, and members of the EMU-AAUP enjoy all of the benefits of membership of the national AAUP organization.

Scope and Contents note

The collection of American Association of University Professors includes AAUP chapter meeting minutes, clippings, and strike agreements. Records span from 1954 until 2011. The collection is arranged into nine series:  Administrative Files, Constitution, By laws, and Policies, Contracts and Agreements, Correspondence, Events, Announcements, and Fliers, Meeting Minutes, Negotiations & Strikes, Press, and  Professors for a Democratic Union.

The Administrative Files series includes ALOC-EMUFT, Board of Regents Recommendations, Executive Committee Updates, Fact-Finder Report, Faculty Surveys, General Files, Health Care and Benefits, Michigan Conference, Presentations by Howard Bunsis, and Reports.  Constitution, By laws, and Policies series are the constitutions and by laws for the AAUP from 1968 until 2003 and a Policies, Documents, and Reports booklet. The  Contracts and Agreements series is a collection of the contracts and agreements between the AAUP and Eastern Michigan University spanning from 1971 until 2010.

The Correspondence series spans from 1954 until 2010.  Events Announcements, and Fliers series spans from 1956 until 2010 including events, announcements and fliers. The  Meeting Minutes series includes meeting minutes from 1957 until 2006. The  Negotiations & Strikes series documents strikes and negotiations from 2000 until 2007. The  Press series includes clippings, news releases and newsletters from 1970 until 2011. Materials in  Professors for a Democratic Union includes a button and general files.
