Abstract
The AmeriCorps records documents the official business of the AmeriCorps members on Eastern Michigan University’s campus from 1998-2000. AmeriCorps is a national service program that supports needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. The collection is arranged into five series:  Administrative Files including the America Reads Challenge, Program Summaries, and Staff Meeting Minutes ,  Events, Handbooks, Publications, and  Reports. The records date from 1990 until 2000.

Historical Note

Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act in 1993, building upon the National Service Act signed by H.W. Bush in 1990. The National and Community Service Trust Act formally established AmeriCorps, which incorporated two existing service programs: VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).

AmeriCorps, was established to meet the nation's needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment, through a network of service programs. In September 2004, 20,000 AmeriCorps members began serving over 1,000 communities. In 2003, George W. Bush signed the Strengthening AmeriCorps Program Act, increasing the number of AmeriCorps members.

The AmeriCorps program at Eastern Michigan University, 1998-2000, focused on issues of service in education, especially as it pertained to literacy.

Scope and Contents note

The collection of AmeriCorps records include meeting minutes, clippings, photographs, and handbooks. Records span from 1990 until 2000. The collection is arranged into five series:  Administrative Files, Events, Handbooks, Publications, and  Reports.

The Administrative Files series includes America Reads Challenge, Inaugurations of AmeriCorps, National and Community Service Trust Act, Photographs, Program Summaries, and Staff Meeting Minutes from 1998-2000. The  Events series includes Michigan’s Americorps Celebration 1999, Make a Difference Day in Michigan books from 1998-1999, and Coordinating Literacy for America’s Students Success.  Handbooks series span from 1996 until 2000 and include the Program Director’s Handbook and the Membership handbook. The  Publications series includes clippings and news releases, pamphlets, handouts and fliers, and Voice of Opportunity Newsletter. The  Reports series contains Progress Report and Second Year Renewal, and Reports and Findings.
