- Abstract
- Alida Westman was a professor of psychology at EMU from 1972-2012. Her research areas of interest included sensation and perception, child and adolescent psychology, cognitive psychology, psychology of religion, and death and dying. The Alida Westman papers, which span the years from 1970-2012, include materials related to her professional activities and publications.

Biographical note
Alida Westman was born in Austria, grew up in The Hague and attended Washington State University before receiving her Ph.D. from Cornell in 1971. She became a professor at EMU in the Department of Psychology in 1972, teaching courses on sensation and perception, child and adolescent psychology, cognitive psychology, psychology of religion, and death and dying, among other subjects. Dr. Westman has published dozens of articles on a wide variety of topics. Dr. Westman retired in 2012.
Scope and contents
The Alida Westman papers consist of biographical material, administrative files, correspondence and publications by Dr. Alida Westman, a professor in EMU's Psychology Department from 1972-2012. The collection includes CVs and biographies, clippings and press releases about Dr. Westman and her work, reports on sabbatical leaves, correspondence, which includes letters about the Extension of Self and Attitudes Towards Death instrument developed by Dr. Westman, as well as a copy of the questionnaire itself, and copies of many of Dr. Westman's published articles.

The collection is arranged into four series: 1. Biographical material, including CVs and biographies as well as clippings and press releases about Dr. Westman and her work; 2. Administrative files, which contains sabbatical leave reports; 3. Correspondence, which includes letters about the Extension of Self and Attitudes Towards Death instrument developed by Dr. Westman, as well as a copy of the questionnaire; 4. Publications, which includes a number of Dr. Westman's published articles.
