Albert P. Marshall served as the director of Eastern Michigan University's library, as well as the dean of Academic Services from 1969 to 1980. The Albert P. Marshall papers documents his work in academic advising, with  Operation Opportunity and the African American Studies department. It also contains a copy of the  Special Services proposal and clippings specific to Marshall. The papers are arranged alphabetically and date from 1969 to 2001.

Biographical note

Albert Prince "A.P." Marshall served as the director of Eastern Michigan University's library and the Dean of Academic Services. His tenure at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) lasted from 1969 until his retirement in 1980.

Born September 5, 1914 in Texarkana, Texas, Marshall received his Bachelor's degrees from Lincoln University and the University of Illinois, Urbana. He also received his Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Marshall worked for several library institutions in Missouri, South Carolina and Illinois before starting at EMU.

Upon being hired at EMU Marshall became involved on campus as well as in the community. Marshall was a leader and mentor to many faculty and students on Eastern’s campus. He became known as "Mr. Ypsilanti". He was involved in the Ypsilanti Rotary Club, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Ypsilanti-Willow Run Branch of the NAACP. Marshall was also highly involved in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, as well as the studying of the Underground Railroad in south east and central Michigan.

Albert P. Marshall died March 9, 2001 at the age of 86.

Scope and Contents note

The Albert P. Marshall papers contain information on academic advising and academic services, the African American Studies department, clippings, correspondence, obituaries and memorials, and Operation Opportunity. The collection is arranged alphabetically and is divided into two series. Records date from 1969 to 2001.

The series included in the collection are: Career and Legacy, and  Proposals and Special Projects. The Career and Legacy series includes five sub-series that document which includes records specific to academic advising, academic services, advisory council for instruction, African American Studies department, class count, clippings, correspondence, curriculum vitae, faculty evaluations and forms, interview transcript, Motown luncheon, news releases, number of courses by hour, obituaries and memorials, photographs, publications, request for new course forms, travel forms and workshops and conferences. The Proposals and Special Projects series includes two sub series of Operation Opportunity and Special Services Proposal and documents Marshall's work with disabled students and special services on campus.
